Older Newborn Photoshoot Inspiration: FAQ and Photo Gallery

This collection features some Older Newborn Photoshoot inspiration and shows babies in my photography studio in Glasgow that are all between 6 and 15 weeks old. Read this blog to hear some frequently asked questions and see the range of props available for some older newborns.

If you had a baby during lockdown then this is for you!

My baby is past the sleepy newborn stage, can I still have a newborn photoshoot?

Absolutely!!
I can guarantee you will fall in love with every image I capture of your little one. They may not be as small and as sleepy, but if you look at the images in this blog, you will see that depending on your little one and their personality…so much is possible!

Wrapped, posed in different outfits, different props and of course….FAMILY PORTRAITS.

What poses can you do with an older newborn?

The good thing about an older newborn is they still love being wrapped, even with their arms out. This allows me to use different posing props like crates, buckets as well as my beanbag. I also have a rug which will allow me to do poses of them lying down on their back, with and without wee outfits on. If they are awake then this will allow for some amazing eye contact images.
Family portraits are also done which is a MUST. These images will allow you to see just how small your precious baby still is.

Can you do a Newborn Session for babies older than 15/16 weeks?

Babies older than 16 weeks old would benefit from a ‘Baby Photoshoot’ where I would incorporate the use of large props and outfits suitable for a baby from 4 months onwards. A baby photoshoot would be very similar to a Newborn Photoshoot but would not include wrapping of your baby into certain poses. Once they reach a stage when they are sitting unaided, I would then advise that you book a ‘Sitter Photoshoot’. This is where mums, dads and the photographer included, all start to work up a sweat as your little one becomes more active and mobile. It makes for some amazing on the go images as well as images of them sitting beautifully in and around props. Their engagement with their surroundings also improves as they hold and grab posing toys, which also makes for amazing images.

Do you recommend a Full Newborn Session or a Mini Newborn Session?

For an older Newborn baby, I would recommend a Mini Newborn Session. A Mini Newborn Session takes around 60-90 minutes and allows me enough time to capture 10 beautifully created images. This amount of time for a session is more than adequate for an older newborn. As they are less likely to sleep, they will become more unsettled should we take on a longer session. 60-90 minutes will allow them to remain happy and settled. And as you can see from the photos below, there are many smiles and so many happy babies. If your baby does sleep, then I will always try some posed poses I usually achieve with younger newborns.
