Pregnancy is an amazing journey full of joyous anticipation of welcoming a precious little one. Each moment is special, so why not capture this journey and growth of your family, in a pregnancy photo session. Otherwise known as a maternity photo session. These images will make a lifetime of sweet memories. While a maternity photo session sounds simple, many mothers-to-be often feel nervous about being photographed. Here are things to consider and how to prepare for a pregnancy photo session.

Find the Right Maternity Photographer

Finding a photographer that suits your style is crucial to ensure that you have the perfect photo session. Therefore, re-search and compare different photographers. Ask questions, read through their reviews and ask for feedback from someone whom you know has had a maternity photo session. The aim is to have somebody you’ll feel comfortable with, and their style resonates with your needs. Having this information will help you prepare for a pregnancy photo session.

Think About the Timing

Many expecting mothers aren’t sure when to schedule a maternity photo session. It’s recommended to have a maternity photoshoot anywhere between 28-38 weeks. At this time, the bump is round and looks beautiful.

Do you want to wear outfits/dresses

Outfits can reflect your personality and make you feel confident. So, ensure that you choose a photographer that can cater for your style and the way you would like to be photographed. Different outfits will be used for different styles. Some accentuate your bump, some will conceal it while other styles will show it off boldly. Having a good range available to you will allow you to stay comfortable. Or, allow you to step outside of your comfort zone should you wish and give you the opportunity to feel and look amazing. If you’d like to consider nudes or implied nude during your session, these will be achieved in a tasteful way with no exposure on camera. Wear neutral underwear and strapless bras as they allow the photographer to accessorize them easily to complement your shape and skin tones.

Research Different Poses

Your photographer is the ideal person to guide you on poses. If you are unsure about how to pose, your chosen photographer will guide you every step of the way and make you feel at ease through it all.  If you have specific poses in mind, you should discuss them with the photographer in advance. Also, explain your limitations regarding poses, nudity or implied nude.

I have created a Pinterest Board with some pose ideas to start you off here.

Talk to Your Spouse/Partner

Let your Spouse/Partner know in advance that they’ll be included in the photo session. This allows them to prepare for the photo session as they are very much a part of this journey. Some encouragement may be needed, but assure your partner that they will never regret having these photos to look back on.

Leave Enough Time to Prepare

Expectant moms can often feel uncomfortable late in their pregnancies, so it’s vital to do things that keep you relaxed and confident. Set aside plenty of time to help prepare for your pregnancy photo session. If you feel that you need a professional hair and makeup session, go for it. This will only boost your confidence and allow you to feel your absolute best during your photoshoot. Your chosen photographer will be able to give you names of recommended hair & makeup artists.
